dc.description.resumoHarpalyce brasiliana Benth (Leguminoseae), a small tree endemic to the north and northeast of Brazil, popularly known as “snake root”. In folk medicine is used for the treatment of inflammation and snakebites, but there is a shortage of studies that justify its use in popular medicine. So, this study aims to evaluate the cytotoxicity, acute toxicity and anti-inflammatory potential of H. brasiliana root extracts in in vivo model. The cytotoxicity of the extract was analyzed through of hemolytic assay, using doses of 31-2000 µg/mL of extract, and the results demonstrated be safe. The acute toxicity test in vivo was performed through of administration of the of 2000 mg/kg of extract, by gavage route. The animals were observed for 14 days and, at the end of the period, the body and organs were weight and the hematological and biochemical parameters were verified and its was evidenced that not showed alterations significative. For the anti-inflammatory activity in vivo, the carrageenan-induced paw edema model was used. The mice received carrageenan intraplanar and simultaneously was treated, by gavage route, with extract at doses of 100, 200 and 400 mg/kg. In this assay, the extract revealed to decrease of paw edema and myeloperoxidase level. For the first time, our data demonstrate that the hydroethanolic extract from H. brasiliana roots is not cytotoxic, has low toxicity in vivo and has anti-inflammatory effect in preclinical analyses, corroborated its use in folk medicine.pt_BR
