Artigo Designing experiments for the optimization of solid-state synthesis and characterization of alumina-based composites(Elsevier, 2019-05) Paskocimas, Carlos Alberto; Araújo, Allan Jedson Menezes de; Alves, Hugo Plinio de Andrade; Andrade, Rivaildo M.; Campos, Liszandra Fernanda Araújo; Macedo, Daniel Araújo de; Pinho, André Luís Silva; Nascimento, Rubens Maribondo doAlumina-based composites were prepared by solid-state synthesis of mixtures containing kaolin clay + alu- minum hydroxide and kaolin waste + aluminum hydroxide. The starting raw materials were characterized by X- ray diffraction (XRD) and quantitative phase analyses of fired samples were performed by Rietveld refinement of the XRD data. The effects of the applied pressing pressure (60–320 MPa) and firing temperature (1400–1500 °C) on volumetric firing shrinkage and apparent density were studied through a 22 factorial design. Mullite/alumina and alumina/glass composites were obtained from kaolin clay and kaolin waste processed ceramics, respectively. Overall results suggest the densification processes of mullite/alumina composites with up to 70.1 wt% mullite and alumina/glass composites with up to 59.7 wt% alumina were dominated by solid-phase and liquid-phase sintering mechanisms, respectively.
